After a bunch of searching I did finally find something that works. The mce remote shown in the above picture working as plug n play, that is without Eventghost.

Below an extract from dmesg showing the Internal Sony ehome transceiver and the external Philips transceiver. The unbind from usbhid looks fine, but to use the device with the mceusb driver you have to extend mceusb’s device id table.
